Sun Chemical, a provider of packaging and graphic solutions, has acquired polyurethane products developer and manufacturer Sapici for an undisclosed sum.

Sapici, which was founded in Italy in 1936, offers polyurethane products for applications such as flexible packaging, coatings, industrial adhesives, prepolymers and inks.

In 2017, Sun Chemical had entered into a strategic alliance with Sapici to market the company’s lamination adhesives portfolio under the commercial brand name of Sun Chemical.

The acquisition of Sapici will enable Sun Chemical to add capabilities to develop and produce advanced polymers for the complete portfolio of inks, coatings, and lamination adhesives, thereby helping to bolster its integrated supply strategy in the packaging market.

Sapici CEO Cristian Furiosi said: “The extensive experience and product portfolio our organization has in this market, combined with Sun Chemical and DIC Corporation’s expertise and complementary products, provide an all-encompassing solution to excite our customers.”

The combined resources and technologies of DIC/Sun Chemical and Sapici will deliver advanced polymer products for industrial coatings, elastomers, industrial adhesives, and sealants.

Sapici is said to combine its product offering with direct and tailored services, including continued technical assistance, research and development, and industrialisation, to its customers across the globe.

In addition, the acquisition will help Sun Chemical to transform into an integrated player in the lamination adhesives market by directly owning assets, technologies and resources to enhance the product portfolio.

Sun Chemical global packaging and advanced materials president Mehran Yazdani said: “Providing our customers with the most effective solutions on the market is priority number one, and the acquisition of SAPICI enables innovation in lamination adhesives to better serve this base.”

“Sapici’s core competencies in the manufacturing of ultra-low monomer isocyanates-based solutions will allow Sun Chemical to further address both current and future trends in sustainability, compliance, food contact, health and safety—reinforcing our commitment to responsible care.”
