German packaging supplier Südpack took its first foray into computer-to-plate technology 18 months ago, with the installation of a HelioFlex F2000. The company’s experiences using this CTP imagesetter for digital imaging of flexo printing forms have prompted it to order a second system from Hell Gravure Systems.

A key factor in Südpack’s decision was said to be the Hell system’s high reliability against failure, especially as the company initially had to rely on a single machine. The use of eight independent lasers in a single system is said to ensure the HelioFlex F2000 can continue with production even if one of them fails. The only effect of this is a loss in system performance from the maximum of 12 min/m2. This is not possible with CTP imagesetters which split a single laser into several beams, according to Hell.
