A new world flexible packaging survey from PCI Films Consulting highlights marked differences in flexible packaging usage amongst developed nations, and major opportunities for growth in developing countries. Regional per capita consumption figures form part of the study, which covers substrate usage by region and profiles over 1,200 converting companies across 23 world markets.
Per capita consumption in the $35.6 billion world flexible packaging market is highest in North America at $41, whereas in Western Europe, the second largest market in volume terms, the figure is $23.25. However, says PCI, the “most dynamic and exciting growth opportunities” can be found in Eastern Europe, and Central and South America and South East Asia, where per capita consumption is $3.45, $5.30 and $1.40, respectively – and where increasing prosperity is fuelling major increases in flexible packaging usage. Whereas demand growth rates in mature markets will range from 0-6 per cent, these emerging markets are growing at up to 15 per cent per annum and offer prospects for even stronger growth.
PCI director Simon King comments: “There’s a two-tier market operating, with competitive mature markets offering minimal value and margin growth, and a second tier of emerging world markets offering lower cost bases, higher growth rates and more attractive investment opportunities than ever before. This is why you’ll find many of the top six converting groups, such as Bemis, Amcor and Sealed Air Cryovac, with footholds or strategic alliances in these developing or emerging countries.”
