Finnish pulp and paper products firm Stora Enso has introduced a new recyclable, unbleached, uncoated board, CarrEco Brown, which is suitable for shopping and takeaway bags.

The new material is made from 100% fresh fibres sourced from sustainably managed forests to support the firm’s goal of eliminating plastics from all its products.

It has a three-layer structure, made with the firm’s patent-pending Tri-Ply technology, offers high tensile and tear strength properties suitable for strong shopping bags, said the company.

The material is said to be safe for direct food contact due to the presence of US Food and drug administration (FDA) approved chemicals, making it suitable for takeout meals and grocery shopping.

The material’s smoothness and forming capabilities give brand owners a lot of printability options. CarrEco Brown comes in grammages starting at 85gsm, allowing Stora Enso’s clients to grow and expand into new areas of the paper bag industry.

Stora Enso packaging materials kraftliners business segment director Oscar Duarte said: “Unbleached paper bags are a good fit with the preferences of today’s eco-conscious consumers. We are well-positioned to meet the growing demand for paper bags, especially in trending end-use areas such as takeaway food.

“Our newest material CarrEco Brown can help our customers seize these growth opportunities in a sustainable way.”

Last month, Stora Enso and Swedish takeaway salad bar company Picadeli partnered to launch renewable formed fibre lids to replace single-use plastics in take-away packaging.
