StePac, which specializes in functional packaging for fresh produce, said it is working with its partners to implement a supply chain solution for the delivery of fresh cherries from farm-to-fork.

The new packaging technology features capabilities to effectively slow respiration and ageing processes, and to control humidity inside the packaging in order to extend the shelf life of the fresh produce.

As part of the collaboration, Tadbik initially created a FreshLid laminated film structure which can be sealed to trays containing fresh produce. Its upper layer can be repeatedly peeled back for reuse.

The partners then developed suitable condensation control properties and control film permeability to deliver optimal modified atmosphere compositions (MAP) for fresh produce items.

StePac technical development manager Gary Ward said: “Successful implementation of MAP requires a holistic approach that includes an understanding of post-harvest pathology, produce physiology, cold-chain logistics, and the interaction of each of these factors with packaging design.”

Upon development, the Xgo resealable lidding film has undergone research and trials at StePac’s post-harvest lab and was approved for shelf life extension of cherries.

In addition to preserving freshness and flavor during long sea shipments, the Xgo film technology maintains attractive packaging design throughout multiple uses, StePac said.

Ward added: “Chinese importers are willing to pay premium prices for high-quality cherries and blueberries.

“This drives the growing export of these fruits from Peru and Chile to China, and with it the need for attractive, functional packaging to preserve quality during the lengthy sea freight.”

The new packaging, which will be marketed under the Stepac’s retail brand Xgo line, is planned to be showcased at the Asia Fruit Logistica 2018 trade show which is scheduled to be held in Hong Kong from 5-7 September.

Tadbik is engaged in providing advanced packaging solutions including flexible packaging, labels, RFID, packaging machinery and in-pack promotions for its customers.
