Packaging company Smurfit Kappa has unveiled a new sustainable packaging solution customised for e-commerce wine sales and growth.

According to the firm, the new solution is certified by Amazon as “Frustration-Free Packaging” (FFP), a first for a generic packaging option that can accommodate various case sizes and wine bottle varieties.

The new wine multi-pack sleek design, which includes an outer box and buffers, will enable it to reach the end user in perfect condition irrespective of the supply chain complexity, the firm claimed.

Smurfit Kappa innovation and development vice president Arco Berkenbosch said: “We are delighted to partner with Amazon to deliver another pre-certified Frustration-Free packaging solution.

“We have used our 15+ years of eCommerce experience to design this solution for the direct-to-consumer wine sector which is continuing to grow at a phenomenal pace.

“Our 100% recyclable new pack will enable businesses selling wine through Amazon Marketplace to get their products to the end consumer quicker and speed to market is a key differentiator in today’s world.”

Amazon’s FFP programme aims to decrease overpacking while also enhancing sustainability and the customer experience. The merchants must adhere to a set of packing requirements before their products are listed on Amazon.

Last month, the company announced its plans to invest $100m in a sustainable biomass boiler at its paper mill facility in Yumbo, Colombia.
