Corrugated packaging company Smurfit Kappa has announced the completion of its €40m investment project to expand its Pruszków corrugated plant in Poland.

The investment, part of Smurfit Kappa’s expansion strategy in Poland, is said to make the plant the largest in Poland and one of the most high-tech and modern packaging plants across Europe.

The expansion has resulted in the installation of new machinery at the plant.

Additionally, the corrugated packaging company anticipates generating 50 new job opportunities, bringing the total number of new jobs to more than 250 at the location.

Smurfit Kappa said that these new jobs will allow the plant to further serve its customer portfolio which includes brands in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) food and beverage sectors and serves both global and local clients.

Smurfit Kappa North-East Europe CEO Jacek Nieweglowski said: “We are delighted to officially unveil the new manufacturing plant here in Pruszków.

“This project took just over one year to complete and will enable us to continue to pursue our strategic goal of being the supplier of choice to our customers, particularly those looking for the most innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.”

A new advanced corrugator and a variety of cutting-edge converting equipment are also part of the investment in Poland.

The facility now has a brand-new completed goods warehouse with a storage capacity of more than 12,000 pallets, the packaging company said.

With the investment, the production of boxes is expected to increase to 500 million yearly, and the expanded facility now covers an area of 37,500m².

Smurfit Kappa Europe CEO Saverio Mayer said: “This significant investment marks our strategic commitment to our presence in Poland and Eastern Europe.

“The Pruszków plant is integral to our business and has a talented and skilled workforce fully committed to delivering the best service to our customers.”

In March this year, the company unveiled its plan to invest €27m in a new advanced waste management and recovery facility at its Nervión paper mill in Iurreta, Spain.
