Paper-based packaging company Smurfit Kappa has awarded a contract to Caddick Construction to build a new manufacturing facility in North Wales, UK.

Under the deal, Caddick will deliver a 14,500m2 expansion at Mold Business Park in Flintshire.

The Mold facility is being used by the packaging firm for the production of shelf-ready packaging for the retail sector, in addition to the packaging for the food and beverage, e-commerce, industrial, health, beauty and agricultural sectors.

Upon completion, the facility is expected to become the largest integrated corrugated plant in the UK.

Caddick Construction aims to complete construction on the new facility by summer next year, while the new production capacity is phased between then and early 2023.

Caddick Construction contracts manager Ben Edwards said: “The expansion will deliver the largest box factory in the company and the Caddick Construction team look forward to helping Smurfit Kappa achieve its growth and sustainability aims.”

The expansion, which is part of Smurfit’s €40m investment, will help increase capacity at the Mold plant. It will also allow the company to meet the increasing demand for sustainable packaging.

According to Caddick Construction, the advanced equipment being installed will minimise carbon dioxide emissions by 15% per tonne.

Smurfit Kappa UK and Ireland CEO, Eddie Fellows, said: “This investment in North Wales will increase our capability, flexibility and speed of response to deliver unrivalled innovative packaging solutions to customers across the UK and Ireland.

“We are determined to meet the future needs of our customers in a sustainable way. It is vital that our investment has benefits for the local community and the environment.”

Operating since 1994, Smurfit Kappa’s Mold manufacturing plant employs 194 people.

In August this year, Smurfit Kappa announced an investment of $22m for the expansion of its corrugated facility in Culiacan, North-West Mexico.
