Packaging solutions provider SIG has started production at its new aseptic carton packaging plant in Queretaro, Mexico.

SIG has invested a total of €73m in the new production plant, which was built in 12 months.

The aseptic carton packaging plant is expected to serve the North American markets. It will also expand SIG’s global production network to support its growth in the region.

SIG’s packaging facility in Queretaro, which has a total size of 20,751.21m², begins production with 500 million carton packs in the first year. The capacity is anticipated to increase to 1.2 billion sleeves next year.

Initially, it will produce mid- and large-size carton packs. The expansion into compact formats is part of SIG’s second phase of the facility.

SIG North America Cluster director Eduardo Gatica said: “Through our existing sales and service presence in North America, we have built strong relationships with our customers in Mexico and established a strong co-manufacturing network in the US.

“Our new packaging plant will enable us to keep up with the growing demand for aseptic carton packs and serve our North American customers faster and more efficiently. We will be able to respond rapidly to changes in demand and reduce our delivery lead times.”

According to the packaging company, the Queretaro plant has the capacity for printing, cutting, and finishing of carton packs. It is said to have a flexible layout with a focus on environment and ergonomics.

The facility has also created 200 new employment opportunities, the packaging firm added.

SIG Americas president and general manager Ricardo Rodriguez said: “Our new plant coming to life is further proof of our commitment to meeting and exceeding our customers’ current and future needs, ensuring flexible supply with outstanding quality, environmental, and service standards.

“It will bring us a step forward in the region, reaffirming our strong reputation as a solution provider who can turn challenges into new opportunities.”
