Packaging solution provider SIG has announced an investment in RotaJET 168 Digital Printing Machine built by Koenig & Bauer for its aseptic carton packs manufactured in Europe.

The new digital printing technology is said to provide full-colour digital printing on SIG carton packs without the need for cylinders or printing forms.

According to Switzerland-based SIG, the solution will provide more flexibilisation and agility to meet customer demands in the fast-paced food and beverage sector.

The new digital printing technology will complement its current high-quality rotogravure printing.

It will be installed at the SIG’s production facility in Linnich, Germany and commercial production is expected to start in the second half of 2023.

SIG product management technology head Holger Schmidt said: “Our aim is to always ensure our customers have the best choice and access to the latest technologies and solutions that keep them at the cutting edge of innovation today and in the future – designed to their needs.

“Small-scale production will make it possible for our customers to be creative with design changes and to test out product ideas in the market with reduced risks. Speed, flexibility, and precise product design are decisive factors for success, and this is exactly what we offer with our digital printing solutions.”

The packaging company said that the flexible SIG Digital Printing technology is suitable for stock-keeping units (SKUs) with lower order quantities.

Additionally, the technology will allow food and beverage customers to make dynamic design changes quickly and easily to make regular modifications and updates.

Koenig & Bauer Segment Digital & Webfed CEO Christoph Müller said: “It’s exciting to see SIG Digital Printing for aseptic carton packs come to fruition and how this new technology will bring a valuable addition to their printing portfolio by providing a streamlined design editing option, as well as the possibility of speeding up their design-to-print process.”
