Packaging solutions provider Sealed Air has signed an agreement with Kuraray America to deliver Plantic bio-based food packaging in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Under the deal, Sealed Air will offer Plantic materials to package perishable foods like poultry, beef and seafood to customers in three countries.

Sealed Air said the Plantic materials serve as an effective oxygen barrier and are competitive with traditional rollstock barrier films.

The company produces barrier bags, non-barrier bags and pouch packaging solutions, as well as film and rollstock packaging solutions.

Sealed Air provides packaging solutions for different food products, including fresh red meat, smoked and processed meats, poultry, dairy liquids, cheese, fluids and pumpables, sea food, convenience food and ready meals, as well as bakery and snack products,

Sealed Air president and CEO Ted Doheny said: “This investment not only accelerates Sealed Air’s commitment to renewability, recyclability and innovation, it is also an important pivot point for expanding the market leadership of the Cryovac and Bubble Wrap brands.”

Kuraray America EVAL and Plantic general manager Robert Armstrong said: “This agreement with Sealed Air expands the options for sustainable bio-based barrier packaging that will benefit consumers, retailers and processors equally.

“Plantic materials set a new standard for bio-based barrier packaging performance, provide unmatched sustainability metrics and can be recycled through traditional streams in some countries including Australia.”

Sealed Air provides food packaging solutions under Cryovac brand and cushioning solutions under Bubble Wrap brand.

With around 15,000 employees, the company carries out operations in 122 countries.

Founded in 1926, Kuraray is a Japanese firm that provides performance-based polymer and synthetic chemistry technologies, including resins, chemical, fibers and textiles.

The US division Kuraray America is specialized in providing barrier polymer materials, including EVAL EVOH and Plantic.
