UK food service chain Pret A Manger has introduced new reusable cup, in a bid to reduce the use of plastic and promote eco-friendly packaging.

Pret, in collaboration with Ecoffee, has developed the new reusable cup.

Produced by using light-weight bamboo fibre, the new reusable cup has a new re-sealable and no-drip lid.

Pret’s reusable cup is available in 12oz (355ml) size at a price of £10.

The food service chain has also announced that it will launch paper straws and remove hot drink stoppers and teaspoons, as part of its global plastic pledge.

Pret is also using more china cups in its stores, and these cups are currently available in over 125 locations.

The business is also undertaking initiatives to improve the recovery and recycling rates of paper cups.

Pret intends to trial cup collection initiative in more shops this year, following trials in London and Manchester in the last year.

Pret CEO Clive Schlee said: “We introduced a market leading discount of 50p for using a reusable cup at the start of the year.

“This increased usage ten-fold which has amazed us all. I’m hoping our own cup will encourage more customers to bring one in. An organic filter coffee for 49 pence must be the best value cup of coffee in the UK.”

With more than 450 shops in the UK, US, Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai, Pret serves over 300,000 customers every day.

Pret’s menu features sandwiches, baguettes, wraps, fruits, treats and snacks. Its menu also features tea and chocolate, salads, Pret pots, soups and Pret’s hot.

The sandwich varieties include avocado toast, balsamic chicken and avocado, California club, chicken and bacon, classic cheddar and tomato, and egg salad toast.

Pret also provides different wrap varieties, including avocado and toasted pine nut wrap, bang bang chicken wrap and chicken, bacon and ranch wrap.
