Pregis has joined the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), an association of flexible packaging suppliers and material or equipment suppliers to the industry in the US, to accelerate its sustainable efforts.

Recently, the protective and flexible packaging firm announced that it is investing up to $80m in a new South Carolina film extrusion facility.

The new facility will allow the company to provide engineered and customer-focused flexible packaging solutions for the brand owners and suppliers in the food, CPG, medical, and converter market segments.

Pregis stated that the new facility is in addition to the firm’s extrusion operations in Grand Rapids of Michigan, which will be extended with new lines this year.

Pregis performance flexibles operations president David Timm said: “With Pregis’ recent investment in world-class film extrusion operations, the time was right to become an active participant in this long-standing and prestigious association.”

Pregis sustainable flexible packaging and market development director Jonathan Quinn said: “The environment is a critical area of interest for Pregis. We have established aggressive Pregis 2K30 sustainability goals and believe in working with organisations that will positively impact our customers and our planet on a local, state and federal level.”

The FPA coordinates with regulators at the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other US regulatory agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration to share industry positions and reduce the regulatory load on the flexible packaging industry.

The FPA is engaged in the monitoring of environmental regulations such as air, water and waste. It also works to promote industry positions to further sustainability objectives.

Pregis’ objectives are also in line with FPA’s initiatives, which also engaged in the development of next-generation flexible packaging leaders through its Emerging Leadership Council. It is chaired by Quinn in addition to his position on the Chairman’s Advisory Council.

FPA president and CEO Alison Keane said: “The FPA is proud to welcome Pregis as an association member. We look forward to lending our support to the company, as well as benefitting from Pregis’ contributions to our efforts.”

Last month, Pregis announced an investment of more than $14m to open a new manufacturing facility in Atlanta, Georgia.
