UK politicians recently debated the impact of the Packaging Waste Regulations on the industry. MPs stressed the burdensome impact legislation has on manufacturing competitiveness and called on the Government to ensure that the composition of the Advisory Committee on Packaging, currently under review, has adequate representation from “the organizations who pay the bills”.

Attention was drawn to the weak enforcement of the current regulations – highlighted by the UK’s failure to meet its 2001 obligations – and there was a general call for more Government resources for household collection schemes.

Ian Dent, chief executive of The Packaging Federation, comments: “This was an important milestone in gaining recognition for our sector and its issues. It is vitally important, faced as we are by a revision to the EU Packaging Directive and other environmental taxes, that the industry pulls together to make its voice heard in the most effective manner possible.”
