Diverse packaging products provider Novolex has installed a new production line at its Chattanooga facility in Tennessee, US.

The new line will allow the company to produce compostable cold beverage cups using plant-based plastic.

The new manufacturing line uses advanced technology from some of the world’s major thermoforming and extrusion equipment suppliers, said Novolex.

Novolex chief technology officer Adrianne Tipton said: “PLA looks, acts and performs like a traditional clear plastic, yet it is 100% compostable in commercial compost facilities.

“At Novolex, we’re focused on a future where the packaging we make is recyclable or compostable.”

Novolex manufactures clear cups using polylactic acid (PLA), a plastics polymer produced from starch-based plants such as corn, sugarcane and wheat straw.

The PLA products offer twofold environmental benefits. Firstly, the products are produced using renewable resources such as corn that can be grown again and again.

Secondly, the PLA products are third-party BPI-certified compostable, thereby making them turn into fertile soil rather than going to a landfill.

The company will sell the clear cups via its Eco-Products brand, which supplies foodservice packaging made from renewable and recycled resources.

Eco-Products president Ian Jacobson said: “We’re creating cups made from plants that, after using, can be composted to help plants grow again.

“It’s part of our commitment to work with our customers to achieve their Zero Waste goal, a win for both our customers and the environment.”

Last month, Novolex agreed to acquire the business of Flexo Converters USA and certain of its affiliates.

Novolex offers packaging products for the customers in the food service, delivery and carryout, food processing and industrial markets.

With over 10,000 employees, Novolex manages 55 manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe, including two plastic film recycling centres.
