Food and beverage company Nestlé has announced a first-ever trial of new paper packaging on KitKat four-finger 45g in Australia in collaboration with supermarket chain Coles.

The exclusive trial will involve more than a quarter of a million KitKat bars that will be available in new paper packaging across select stores.

Starting this month, the new KitKat Milk 45g bars will be exclusively available at Coles stores across Western and South Australia and the Northern Territory.

According to the firm, the people in Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory can scan a QR code found on each bar to participate in a survey about the new paper packaging by answering a series of questions.

Paper packaging may be recycled using kerbside recycling bins that collect and process paper. The trial wrapper comprises a recyclable ARL and a thin metal barrier layer to keep the KitKat fresh, the firm said.

Nestlé Oceania Confectionery and Snacks general manager Chris O’Donnell said: “We’re proud to be the first country globally to trial KitKat in paper packaging, as an important step towards reducing our use of virgin plastic.

“With all packaging innovations, our priority is to ensure we deliver the same delicious KitKat with creamy chocolate and crisp wafer.”

“Our partnership with Coles has made this packaging trial a possibility, where Aussie chocolate lovers can have their say on our innovative KitKat packaging. The feedback we receive on this trial will help shape the next step of giving Aussies their favourite break.”

The food and beverage company said that the new product will help to meet Nestlé’s goal of lowering its use of virgin plastics by a third by 2025, which includes using less plastic, recycled plastic, and alternatives to plastic packaging.

In October last year, Nestlé Confectionery announced a change in packaging for its Quality Street and KitKat brand products.
