NDC Technologies Unveils New Gauging Solutions for Narrow Web Converters at ICE USA 2017

NDC Technologies, a leading global provider of precision measurement and control solutions, will debut the latest innovations for narrow web gauging applications at ICE USA in Orlando, Florida (April 25 – 27, 2017). The new line-up at Booth 901 includes the 8000-SLIM web gauging system with ultra-compact SlimTrak scanner and ConvertIR gauge for fixed-point coat weight and moisture measurements. NDC will also be exhibiting the Beta LaserMike LaserSpeed non-contact length and speed gauge with the highest accuracy in the industry.

Narrow Web Gauging

The new 8000-SLIM web gauging system with SlimTrak scanner is the converting industry’s answer for a compact measurement system on narrow-web lines. The SlimTrak scanner has a small cross-section footprint for tight-space installations and supports NDC’s most popular gauges such as the IG710 and SR710 infrared gauges or a Gamma Backscatter gauge. The 8000-SLIM system is built on NDC’s renowned TDi quality management software platform and delivers fast, real-time measurement and tight control of key product parameters such as thickness, coat weight, basis weight and moisture. The 8000-SLIM is available in a variety of scanner and gauge configurations to meet the desired narrow web measurement application.

The new ConvertIR gauge provides fixed-point, non-scanning on-line measurement of paper moisture or coat weight of coatings on paper and films. This infrared gauge is based on NDC’s proven optical filter technology. ConvertIR delivers NDC’s pedigree of long-term stability and accurate measurement performance, independent of changes in ambient conditions such as lighting, temperature or humidity. Because of its fast measurement speed, ConvertIR delivers continuous moisture or coat weight measurements enabling converting processes to be consistently measured and tightly controlled with confidence. ConvertIR is available in two configurations: a single gauge with Operator Interface (OI) for post dryer or conditioner moisture measurements or single-point coat weight, and a dual gauge with both instruments connected to a single OI to provide left and right coat weight measurements for basic profile measurement and manual control.

Product Length and Speed

Also on display is the Beta LaserMike LaserSpeed gauge from NDC. LaserSpeed measures the length and speed of any moving surface with better than ±0.03% accuracy and without contacting the product.

It is an ideal solution for replacing error-prone, high-maintenance contact encoders. LaserSpeed uses laser-based technology to precisely measure both web and packaging products involving paper, film, sheet and foil. Typical applications include measuring product length and speed at the slitter/rewinder, continuous length measurement, regulating coating/laminating applications, controlling critical length cutting operations, adjusting roll speeds in flying-splice processes and monitoring web tension of products. Converters realize numerous production efficiencies and material savings.
