US metallizing giant Vacumet is to build an 80,000ft2 facility that will boost the group’s capacity by over 25M lb/year. The new plant in Atlanta is scheduled to be fully commercial by March, 2004. With it, Vacumet will have a total of 13 film and five paper metallizers at six manufacturing sites.

“This latest investment confirms our commitment to our customers’ needs and our desire to add the newest available technology,” says Bob Korowicki, president of Vacumet. “State of the art equipment is our answer to supplying our customers’ growing demands. In 2001 we rebuilt our Midwest Division with a new 60,000ft2 plant in Addison, Illinois. That resulted in increased market share and economies of scale for our company. I am convinced we will achieve a comparable success at our Southeast Division.”

Galileo Vacuum Systems will again supply all the equipment. “We selected Galileo based on our successful experience with the two metallizers installed in 2001 at our Addison plant,” he reveals. The Italian company will supply two 3.3m wide Gold metallizers capable of handling roll diameters up to 1.2m, two compatible MRS matching slitters, and all roll handling equipment.

The new machinery will provide a totally integrated and seamless solution between the metallizers and the slitters. The rolls will be virtually untouched from the moment they are ready for loading onto the metallizer, until they are packed and ready for shipment. This will preserve the aluminum layer throughout the converting process, maintaining its gas and water vapour barrier properties, the company states.
