Packaging and paper maker Mondi is set to unveil two new recyclable packaging products, PerFORMing Monoloop and Mono Formable PP, for the food industry.

PerFORMing Monoloop is a paper-based tray, while Mono Formable PP is a semi-rigid plastic tray.

The packaging solutions will be exhibited at Anuga FoodTec in Cologne Germany, from 26 to 29 April 2022.

The new trays are said to provide fresh food manufacturers with recyclable alternatives that can help to reduce food waste.

PerFORMing Monoloop is designed for sliced food such as cheese or meat. The combination of a paper tray with a barrier layer and a plastic top web solution is said to minimise plastic consumption.

The barrier layer when detached from the paper tray will allow all parts to be disposed of separately in the appropriate waste streams.

PerFORMing Monoloop, certified recyclable by Institute cyclos-HTP, provides high flexibility because it is appropriate for a variety of depths and shapes on existing lines.

Mono Formable PP created from mono-material polypropylene (PP) features a printed top web and a thermoformable semi-rigid bottom web.

The packaging weighs 30% less than a comparable polyester (PET) tray and has features like easy-peel for convenient opening and/or reclosure.

The company developed two new solutions to safeguard fresh food contents at every stage of the production and distribution process, ensuring them last longer through intelligent design and the ability to use MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) to enhance shelf-life.

According to Mondi, the packaging prevents exposure to factors such as moisture, fumes, and grease and improves convenience and portion management while decreasing food waste.

Mondi FMCG & Industrial channels sustainable packaging solutions head Thomas Kahl said: “Sustainability is front and centre when we design new solutions, using paper where possible and plastic when useful.

“We think deeply about materials and take a holistic approach that supports the development of sustainable systems and circular economies.

“We are pleased to be launching these new food packaging solutions at the Anuga FoodTec where Mondi is exhibiting for the first time.”
