Packaging and paper group Mondi collaborated with French machine supplier Thimonnier to launch a recyclable packaging for liquid soap refills.

The new solution is completely recyclable and reduces plastic usage by more than 75% compared to rigid plastic bottles.

The packaging solution has been designed so that it can be completely emptied, said Mondi.

The berlingot sachet is composed of coextruded polyethylene (PE), a recyclable mono-material.

Mondi stated that the refill solution has the potential to replace the present industry standard of multilayer PVC refill containers, which are not recyclable.

The long-lasting and leak-proof solution allows customers to smell the product within, which is considered to be a key feature for the liquid soaps it is meant to preserve.

The lightweight material of the solution will make it more suitable for customers who buy in-store.

Thimonnier general manager Eric Duhoo said: “Our goal working with Mondi was to find a packaging alternative with low environmental impact and good runnability.

“We are pleased to have found a solution that achieves both.”

Mondi regional sales consumer flexibles Olivier Werbrouck said: “Our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework sets ambitious goals to tackle global issues across the value chain: creating circular-driven packaging and paper solutions that are made by empowered people taking action on climate.

“We are proud and excited to partner with customers like Thimonnier to achieve our goal of keeping materials in circulation and making a real difference.”

The berlingot refill package was introduced during the 25th edition of the CFIA, which took place from 8 to 10 March in Rennes, France.

Mondi has launched the MAP2030 programme to make 100% of its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

For Mondi, the partnership with Thimonnier shows its commitment towards the significance of building a circular economy.

Last month, Mondi announced to invest €280m in corrugated packaging operations across four nations to improve production and customer service.
