Packaging and paper company Mondi has developed a new recyclable corrugated packaging for Warmhaus, a Turkish radiators and boilers producer for home heating.

The new Monocorr Box is produced using a 100% recyclable corrugated board, including the inserts that cushion the packaged products.

Warmhaus has selected new recyclable packaging to replace its expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam inserts, thereby helping to increase recycling rates across Europe.

Monocorr Box, which can be easily recycled, is expected to support Warmhaus’s exports to the European Union as some retailers prefer EPS-free packaging even for larger durables.

Warmhaus purchasing unit leader Fatih Aydın said: “We were looking for a solution that overcomes the challenges we face with rigid foam products.

“We are committed to energy saving and protecting the environment, and we want our product packaging to reflect the same standards.”

Designed to be delivered flat, the corrugated inserts are said to take 94% less space during transport and storage than the earlier EPS foam inserts.

Compared to earlier packaging, the assembled Monocorr Boxes are more compact and the size of the outer box was minimised by 6%, enabling Warmhaus to stack 20% more items on each shipping pallet, said Mondi.

Mondi Turkey corrugated solutions sales director Metin Morhayim said: “With our EcoSolutions approach, we were able to meet our customer’s expectations for sustainable packaging while also improving the efficiency of their stacking and shipment processes.

“This is an ideal solution for Turkey and all other markets. Eliminating the EPS foam element is key to making packaging for white goods and other household appliances part of a circular economy.”

In December last year, Mondi opened a new packaging testing laboratory in České Budějovice, Czech Republic.
