Packaging and paper firm Mondi has announced that it is investing €65m in its three production plants in Europe to meet customer demand for sustainable pet food packaging solutions.

The funds will be used to boost the production capacity of three Consumer Flexibles packaging plants, including Mondi Korneuburg in Austria and Mondi Halle and Mondi Steinfeld in Germany

The latest move is part of Mondi’s previously announced €1bn expansionary capital investment programme to solidify its position in pet food packaging while accelerating the development of sustainable packaging.

Work at Korneuburg (Austria) plant has already begun and includes an increased production area and investments in new advanced technology and equipment.

According to the firm, the changes will increase the capacity and bolster the site’s position as the industry leader in pre-made retort stand-up pouches for wet pet food.

At the Mondi Halle and Mondi Steinfeld plant in Germany, the packaging firm will invest in new equipment to boost the capacity of manufacturing sustainable pre-made bag solutions for pet food, household and personal care products.

The move will enable future development and help clients as they shift from multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging to more sustainable options like single-material recyclable stand-up pouches and pre-made paper bags.

Mondi Consumer Flexibles COO Dirk Gabriel said: “We take pride in being an innovative, agile partner for our customers. With this investment, we continue to take the lead in packaging solutions that are sustainable by design, especially in the pet food industry.

“This investment also supports our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework which is focused on circular driven solutions, created by empowered people, taking action on climate.

“With these projects, we’re increasing operational efficiency and reducing our own energy consumption while also connecting our production network.”
