Packaging and paper solutions provider Mondi has partnered with Nordic food manufacturer HKScan to develop renewable paper-based packaging for Falukorv sausage.

The new renewable paper-based packaging has been used for Scan Falukorv 800g, a Swedish sausage brand.

The new packaging, which consists of renewable materials, is produced using responsibly sourced paper and bio-based plastic.

Mond stated that it has used its EcoSolutions approach to collaborate with HKScan’s R&D team to offer the right barrier paper without making any changes to its existing production lines.

The replacement of an unrecyclable plastic multi-layer material with paper-based packaging results in a significant reduction in the carbon footprint.

The transportation is kept to a minimum, as the paper is sourced, coated and printed in Sweden.

In addition, the new packaging can be disposed of in Swedish paper recycling streams due to its high paper content.

Mondi functional paper and films business solutions manager Fridberg said: “Our aim is always to develop fit-for-purpose packaging that is sustainable by design.

“Our work with HKScan to facilitate their switch to recyclable and renewable paper packaging for Scan Falukorv 800g is a great example of that. It has led to a significant reduction in carbon impact, with no change in the consumer experience, and that is truly something to be celebrated.”

HKScan has determined to achieve a net-zero carbon dioxide emissions target by 2025, as well as a carbon-neutral food chain by the end of 2040.

HKScan Sweden quality and environment Maria Häger said: “The barrier paper from Mondi is a valuable piece of the jigsaw puzzle, enabling us to proudly announce this new, recyclable packaging for our Falukorv sausage, reducing its CO2 impact from the previous solution by 70%.”

Last month, the packaging firm launched new sustainable corrugated packaging solutions for the online grocery market across Central Europe.
