Packaging and paper company Mondi has developed a new paper packaging PelletBags to replace the unnecessary plastic in wooden pellets of Holz-Bauer.

The PelletBags are made from two-ply Mondi kraft paper which is produced, printed and converted in-house. The paper packaging is then sent to Holz-Bauer for filling and closing, using its sewing method with a static binder machine.

Mondi’s PelletBags, available in white and brown, and in a range of sizes up to 25kg, are expected to help Holz-Bauer to replace its current plastic bag solution, which is currently used as an industry standard for wooden pellets.

The shift to paper packaging by Holz-Bauer shows the increasing trend of using sustainable packaging solutions.

Both firms have complementary sustainability goals, which intend to contribute to a circular economy together.

The wooden pellets used by Holz-Bauer are made from waste from local sawmills. This method of utilising sawmill waste adheres to the idea of cascading use of the wood that Mondi supports and maximises the value of fibre.

In this method, the wood is utilised initially for high-performance goods with hygiene or strength criteria, such as kraft paper. It is then recycled repeatedly until the end of its useful life when the leftovers are burned for green energy.

Holz Bauer owner Martin Bauer said: “By partnering with Mondi, we are working with a company that has the same goals – the team helped us create packaging that will be right for our products and our eco-conscious consumers.”

The kraft paper is made from sustainable, ethically produced fibres, and the finished paper bag can be recycled in regular European recycling systems, the paper and packaging firm said.

According to Mondi, the bags are conveniently transportable and storable and have good tear resistance.

Holz-Bauer’s 15kg PelletBags are handcrafted to express the firm’s own brand and corporate identity.

Mondi Paper Bags sales director Fabio Barbieri said: “We work along the approach of using paper where possible, plastic when useful – PelletBags provide the required strength and protection to pack wooden pellets.

“Using packaging from the same renewable resource as the contents themselves increases the brand value of the product, providing a sustainable and convenient solution for the end user.”
