UK-based packaging firm Mondi has introduced Hug&Hold, a compostable, paper-based solution to replace plastic shrink wrap for PET bottle bundle packs.

Hug&Hold is currently available for 0.5l up to 1.5l PET bottles in bundles of six or four.

It is made up of two components that allow for safe stackings of bundles of bottled drinks and secure transportation.

The first component is a 100% kraft paper sleeve that wraps around the bottles and holds them firmly.

Made of Advantage SpringPack Plus, it provides high tensile strength and capacity to support adequate weight to strap and stabilise the bottles during transit.

The second component is a corrugated clip that holds the bottles around the neck, said Mondi.

The presence of an optional integrated handle will help to carry and transport the bundle of bottles easily.

Mondi stated the separation of single bottles from the pack by the consumer or retail personnel adds to the convenience of the design.

According to the firm, Hug&Hold is a strong and stable solution produced from renewable and entirely recyclable materials that is fit for the continent of Europe’s current paper waste streams.

The team collaborated with Krones, a provider of packaging automation technology, to guarantee that Hug&Hold can pack bottles using the most recent Krones equipment in a completely automated manner.

Krones also provides options to adapt its current equipment, making it simple to move to Hug&Hold as a sustainable substitute.

Mondi Specialty Kraft Paper Sales Director Silvia Hanzelova said: “Leveraging Mondi’s team of kraft paper and corrugated specialists, we were able to develop a fully paper-based solution with minimal material usage.

“Following thorough testing with Krones and a global beverage brand, Hug&Hold has been confirmed in terms of runnability and viability.”
