Packaging and paper firm Mondi has developed a recyclable, lightweight packaging solution for Goldwell, the salon hair cosmetic brand of Japanese consumer goods company Kao.

The new stand-up pouch minimises the use of plastic without comprising on strength and durability, supporting Kao and its salon business to reduce environmental impact and assist salons in operating more sustainably.

Mondi’s creative packaging solution packs the powdered products in flexible, re-closable stand-up pouches that are composed of recyclable mono-material.

The hair-lightening products are now available in a stand-up pouch with plastic content reduced by 80% compared to the former packaging.

The pouch is given to the user together with paper instructions within a carton box, allowing the pouch to be stacked during the storage and resulting in a lower carbon footprint compared to the previous packaging alternative.

Mondi said that the empty pouches can be folded flat to facilitate effective transit to the manufacturer.

When filled, the pouches are said to offer the maximum protection for the product as they contact with moisture or vapour coming in.

The packaging firm said that the chemicals cannot spread through the securely sealed packets, making the packaging entirely safe.

With a recyclable top slider and tamper-evident membrane, the package is also simple to reclose for convenience.

Mondi regional sales consumer flexibles Iris Ross said: “The solution we developed with Kao contains a chemical-based product that is particularly sensitive, so we needed to consider safety and quality at all times. The new packs are completely secure during shipment when filled and easy to transport.”
