Mondelēz is planning to sustainably source all paper-based packaging by 2020 and offer recycling information by 2025, enabling to deliver its long-term vision for zero-net waste packaging.

The company said it will work in partnerships to ensure that packaging is collected and recycled in global markets. The new commitment will help deliver Mondelēz’s long-term vision for zero-net waste packaging.

In order to reduce packaging waste, the plans to make it easier for consumers to recycle packaging and support industry coalitions to enhance recycling rates.

To achieve the objectives, the firm committed to use all packaging made with recyclable material by 2025 and offer design guidelines for circular economy to packaging developers, set priorities and identify materials to use or avoid across its packaging range.

The company removed 53.5 million kg of packaging material since 2013, and is planning to take the number to 65 million kg  by 2020.

The measures are in line with the firm’s commitment to use the right amount of material to keep products fresh and safe, while reducing the amount of packaging used.

Mondelēz also plans to make it easy for consumers to recycle or re-use product packs after use via local recycling systems across the world.

In addition, the firm will support industry coalitions and public-private partnerships to develop advanced waste-management infrastructure to decrease waste and enhance real-world recycling rates.

Around 75% of the firm’s packaging is comprised of glass, paper or metal, as well as 70% of paper-based packaging is from recycled sources.

Mondelēz International research, development, quality and innovation executive vice president Rob Hargrove said: “As the global snacking leader, we’re committing to using sustainably-sourced materials and recyclable packaging as part of our active contribution to reduce packaging waste and establish a circular economy for packaging.

Together with partners from across the industry, as well as public and private entities, we can help to develop practical solutions that result in a positive environmental impact.”
