Green-tech start-up Melodea has announced that it is offering recyclable cellulose coated packaging to help minimise plastic waste and maintain higher ethical standards.

MelOx, a plant-sourced barrier coating, has been developed by the company to protect packaged products from oxygen and oil and grease transmission.

The company also developed Melodea VBcoat to provide protection for packaged goods from water vapour and oil and grease transmission.

Melodea sources its barrier coating material used to produce packaging from wood pulp, a raw material that is also used to manufacture paper.

The company uses its advanced technology for the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals from wood pulp sourced from trees grown in industrial forests.

To protect from oxygen, oil, grease, and water vapour transmission, sustainable barrier coatings are uniquely designed by the company.

Designed to avoid the use of aluminium and plastic, the coatings will help maintain the quality and integrity of the packaged foods inside.

In addition, the coatings are compostable, recyclable, and completely non-toxic for people and the environment, said the company.

Melodea CEO and co-founder Shaul Lapidot said: “Cellulose, the primary building block of the cell walls of all plants, is the most abundant biopolymer on the planet.

“It provides plants with extraordinary strength, and is a lightweight—yet strong—material We found that this bounteous and renewable material can be utilized to produce novel, eco-friendly packaging alternatives for the packaging industry.”

Melodea’s liquid formulas are suitable to use as a coating to various substrates, including paper, paperboard, bio-plastic, and even plastic itself.

These coatings can be used by companies across the packaging value chain ranging from paper and packaging producers to consumer goods manufacturers and food companies.

The high-barrier coatings are suitable for a range of products, including pouches, lids, and food and beverage cartons. It can be used for both dry and liquid products.
