Polish food company Maspex Wadowice Group has debuted domeTwist closure with tethered cap (domeTwist TC) of packaging firm SIG for the latter’s carton bottle combidome.

The retail rollout by the Polish firm comes ahead of the European Union (EU)’s Single-Use Plastics Directive. The law mandates that by July 2024, all single-use beverage containers should come with caps that stay attached to the pack.

The Single-Use Plastics Directive is expected to help in easily disposing of and recycling caps with the rest of the pack.

SIG said that the domeTwist TC closure can be fixed firmly to the intended position by pushing it down to the top of the pack until it settles into its parking mode.  The user can effortlessly pour and drink from the carton without having to hold the cap firmly in place, the Switzerland-based firm said.

The cap only needs to be lifted slightly before it is closed in the usual manner. Tethering even offers convenience, as the closure is always at hand and is never lost, added the company.

According to the packaging firm, market research has shown that both drinking and pouring are highly accepted by consumers.

The SIG domeTwist closure is also compatible with the company’s existing filling lines and closure applicators. The company said that the features of the domeTwist closure will help European beverage producers like Maspex to comply with the regulatory requirements of the EU.

SIG Nordics, Poland and Ukraine senior marketing manager Karina Ostatek said: “Maspex is committed to continuously improving their production technologies and product ranges to find optimal and environmentally conscious solutions.

“Being the first worldwide to use SIG’s domeTwist with tethered cap on the Tymbark juice ranges in the unique combidome carton bottle, means they are offering increasingly environmentally aware consumers the opportunity to play their part in minimising plastic waste leakage into the environment.”

The domeTwist closure with tethered cap for combidome is among the three new closure designs for SIG’s packs in Europe. In addition, combiSwift and combiMaxx closures with tethered caps are also available for the company’s family-size carton packs.
