Kamakshi Südpack, a joint venture between German film packaging firm Südpack and India-based flexible packaging company Kamakshi Flexiprints, has opened its new flexible films production plant in Ahmedabad, India.

The new facility forms part of Südpack’s internationalisation strategy and a strategic hub for the development of the quickly expanding Indian market.

It also intends to meet the demand for high-quality flexible films in a variety of industries with a broad product and service portfolio.

Built with an investment of INR2bn ($24.2m), the facility will produce packaging material for food and the pharmaceutical industry.

Südpack managing director Tharcisse Carl said: “Our well-considered site concept is designed so we can gradually expand its capacities in order to meet the ever-increasing demand for multilayer films that are both innovative and sustainable for flexible packaging on the Indian subcontinent.”

Announced in July 2020, the facility has an installed capacity of 24,000 tonnes per year (TPA) and a total size of approximately 47,000m².

Südpack said the facility will feature modern extrusion, printing, coating, and laminating equipment for the development and finishing of high-performance films.

It meets IGBC green building standards and complies with present and upcoming international laws and regulations, including GMP, BRC, FSMS ISO 22001, QMS ISO 9001, and SMS-ISO 45001.

The facility is divided into areas for extrusion, printing, laminating and pouch production and recently, individual lines were commissioned to produce flexible packaging solutions at the site that meet the highest standards of quality.

Kamakshi Südpack managing director Harish Goel said: “Südpack’s unparalleled and long-standing expertise in coextrusion and film finishing in combination with our excellent knowledge of the market opens up opportunities for us that we had not been able to exploit in such a way until now.”

Additionally, the JV has plans to improve market penetration, more rapid response times to the changing demands of the packaging industry and the quick supply of local customers.
