Canadian packaging firm Jones Healthcare has launched a sustainable blister pack, dubbed FlexRx One Blister Pack, which uses eco-friendly bio-PET material.

The new blister pack is said to be suitable for retail, speciality, and long-term care pharmacies that employ centralised fulfilment or in-house automation.

Jones Healthcare said the new solution is ideal for pharmacies that prepare prescriptions by hand because the speed and quality of sealing stay consistent regardless of filling technique.

The chemical-free bioplastic of the blister pack is sourced from renewable resources and is easily recyclable.

Jones Healthcare claims that FlexRx One Blister Pack can seal materials in half the time when compared to other available solutions.

According to the company, the blister pack does not need additional labels because the patient information is directly printed on the package.

FlexRx One Blister Pack will make medications more accessible for the patients due to the presence of perforated backings, allowing them to push through the backing.

It will provide pharmacies with an option for customisation as they can put the message in a large space on the packaging to build brand awareness and recognition.

Jones Healthcare medication adherence senior vice president Trevor Noye said: “Sealing adherence packs has to be just as quick as filling them with meds using automated robots. Otherwise, pharmacies and centralised fulfilment centres will see bottlenecks in their operations.

“Working with our clients in their pharmacies, we found ways to reduce time and motion to seal this packaging, while ensuring the process is easy and repeatable. The FlexRx One takes half the time to seal compared to other solutions.”

In December last year, Jones Healthcare announced to expand its Qube and FlexRx family of medication adherence products for pharmacies with sustainable packaging.
