Pet food producer Irish Dog Foods has partnered with packaging solutions provider Coveris to launch recyclable bags in bigger sizes.

Under the partnership, Coveris enabled Irish Dog Foods to replace its existing range of PET/PE bags with mono-material PE bags that facilitates full recyclability.

In addition, the range included two sizes of 10kg and 12kg bags.

Coveris said that the sustainability and shelf appeal requirements of the brand have been met by selecting its MonoFlexE brand.

MonoFlex solutions, which are available for all food and non-food applications, support a range of formats including vertical and horizontal (flow wrap) form, fill and seal, stand up pouches and pre-made bags, said the packaging firm.

Coveris pet food key account manager Philippe Poudens said: “We were able to provide bigger bags with the same benefits as our standard structures with a matte finish, while reducing the carbon footprint and preserving the environment, which was one of the key challenges for our customer.”

“The matte finish of the bag offers outstanding communication and shelf appeal, which answered both the customer and market demand.”

Coveris stated that the new pet food bags are available in Aldi stores in the UK, having been introduced in summer 2021.

Aldi and Coveris signed up to the UK Plastics Pact, which aims to transform 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

Irish Dog Foods purchase manager Jamie Queally said: “We wanted to be one of the first to offer recyclable bags on the market but we didn’t want it to impact our production process and machinery.

“Coveris was able to provide us with a new, recyclable material, however, with the same characteristics as our previous bags with the PET/PE structure.”
