The Sonoco Paperboard Can in combination with some clever fat absorbing technology is set to offer the world’s first packaging solution to answer the age-old dilemma of how to dispose of used cooking oil.

MegaAbsorb, developed by US based Megatech LLC, is designed to offer a cleaner means of oil disposal, sparing drains and bins of blockages and mess.

Described as a lightweight, non-toxic, non-flammable, non-carcinogenic, odourless amorphous silica, MegaAbsorb is built into the base of the can to safely digest used grease, oils and residual odours in multiple uses. The can, comprising two plies of spiral wound recyclable paperboard, incorporates a foil-based liner to protect the powder-like silica and oil after the product is opened and in use.

A Sonoco Safetop peelable membrane top and flexible plastics over-cap was chosen for easy open and seal between uses. Once the can is completely filled it is discarded into the household waste-stream where it can be landfilled or incinerated.

Branded in the US as Grease-B-Gon, Megatech with partners Sonoco plan to launch the product into the UK and mainland European markets. Sonoco is currently in talks with a number of UK companies in the houseware support field, says a company spokesperson, with the first applications predicted to hit shelves in three months.
