German styrenics supplier INEOS Styrolution has unveiled its new K-Resin DK11 material for controlled atmosphere packaging (CAP) film applications.

The firm said that the solution can preserve the freshness, colour and integrity of the fruits because they must be allowed to ripen naturally without the application of preservatives or ripeners during shipping.

Proved as a suitable material for Chinese banana farmers, the packaging solution can control the ripening of bananas during transportation from Yunnan to other coastal regions in China.

K-Resin DK11 offers a tough and high clarity film that combines good thermal stability with high gas permeability for the long shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

INEOS Styrolution Asia-Pacific transparent specialities director Jary Liao said: “We are extremely pleased with the performance of the CAP film produced using our K-Resin DK11.

“The excellent gas permeability of this film allows for the organic ripening of the bananas while preserving the shelf life of the fruit, especially during long cross-city state journeys.

“With the increasing tightening of plastic food contact safety compliance regulations both in China and globally, Ineos Styrolution continues to renew, improve and differentiate our portfolio and services to generate further value, ensuring fresh fruits and vegetables to the people in China and the rest of the world.”

The film is made from Ineos’s crystal-clear thermoplastic styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBC) which is known for its clarity, impact toughness, stiffness, and gloss.

INEOS created this material in compliance with international food contact regulations which make it an ideal choice for applications requiring food-contact compliance.

The firm added that the K-Resin thermoplastic SBC has been used for packaging, toys, medical components, displays and other applications for more than four decades.

The company’s other offerings from the crystal-clear thermoplastic SBC segment include Styrolux and Styroflex which aim to provide transparency and impact resistance for use in various applications.

Last month, Hualo Film selected INEOS Styrolution’s Styroflex PG77 for its stretch hood film solution.
