Finnish consumer packaging company Huhtamaki has unveiled its new recyclable ICON ice cream packaging to meet sustainable packaging’s demand in North America.

According to the firm, ICON packaging combines Huhtamaki’s water-based barrier coating with SFI-certified paperboard and is made from 95% renewable biobased material.

This enables ice cream containers and lids to be recycled in North America alongside other paper goods like folded carton packaging.

The ICON ice cream packaging is intended to help Huhtamaki in the transition to paper-based package formats and more environmentally friendly barriers without sacrificing packaging functionality, such as structural integrity in frozen supply chains.

It is made using the firm’s expertise in barrier functionality and paper forming.

Huhtamaki claimed that paper-based materials can provide viable alternatives to plastic by developing new techniques and focusing on important features like condensation resistance.

Huhtamaki North America president Ann O’Hara said: “Our paper-based technology and barrier solutions are the key differentiators in ICON ice cream packaging.

“The technology allows ice cream packaging to enter the existing North American recycling stream more easily.”

For producers, using paper for ice cream packaging can offer possibilities for designing and shaping the container or full-cover printing options to support marketing initiatives.

While waiting, customers can benefit from the firm’s Connected Packaging by scanning the QR code on every piece of ICON packaging to learn how to recycle it after use.

ICON packaging, the first-to-market innovation in paper packaging technology, aligns with the company’s goal to lead the industry in environmentally friendly packaging options.

Last month, the Finnish firm launched the recyclable ICON ice cream packaging in the US.

Huhtamaki aims to achieve carbon-neutral production and make all its products to be recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030.
