Finland-based Huhtamaki has announced its investment in Emerald Technology Ventures’ sustainable packaging fund to develop next-generation sustainable packaging solutions.

As a limited partner, Huhtamaki will support the growth of start-up innovation and stimulate the development of next-generation sustainable packaging solutions.

Launched in April 2022, the fund, specialising in eco-friendly packaging, is one of the first venture-backed investment vehicles to focus on the entire packaging lifecycle.

Emerald intends to support efforts to green the entire value chain using low-carbon feedstocks, innovative business models and digitisation.

Currently, the venture capital firm is providing packaging solutions to Beiersdorf, Chevron, Henkel, Nestlé, and WM.

Huhtamaki president and CEO Charles Héaulmé said: “We embed sustainability in everything we do and are happy to invest in Emerald’s sustainable packaging fund as it is aligned with our strategic priorities.

“We look forward to working with Emerald, whose expertise and global reach will help us explore new possibilities to create value for our customers and shareholders, as well as our employees and the planet.”

The fund intends to accelerate advancements in materials and industrial technologies that will both benefit the world and generate profits, as the packaging industry aims to cut waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

Emerald will look for investments in industries spanning all phases of the circular economy, from smart packaging to raw materials to plastics recycling, using its experience of working with different partners.

Huhtamaki intends to attain carbon-neutral production and design all of its products to be recyclable, biodegradable, or reusable by 2030,

In line with this, the company consistently invests in innovation while attempting to create new, next-generation innovation that has a net positive impact.

Huhtamaki’s investment follows its earlier partnership with start-ups, launched in 2020 as part of Huhtamaki’s centennial, to deliver sustainable packaging solutions for the future.

In April this year, Henkel Adhesive announced its investment in Emerald’s sustainable packaging innovation fund.
