Digital technology developed in Argentina is claimed to have made it possible to print flexible packaging in gravure using only the four CMYK colours – without the need for special Pantone inks.

Bolognino, a specialist in gravure prepress for packaging, says its patent pending system will reduce costs and cut the time involved in all the processes from the moment the converter receives the digital files until the job is done. It is also says free grouping of several designs in the same run is allowed by the possibility of using an unlimited number of flat colours for the job.

Bolognino also promises a considerable reduction in stock of cylinders and inks in the plant – and in the need for recycling mixed inks for re-use. The new system is based on special engraving curves, software, and high definition colour profiles, and the use of ‘enhanced gamut’ CMYK inks.
