Food packaging supplier Tri-Star in Enfield has launched what it claims is the world's first clear, biodegradable sandwich wedge.

The “specially formulated” material used to make the pack is manufactured from “US-sourced” PLA, a polymer produced from lactic acid which is itself derived from dextrose obtained from corn starch. Tri-Star says the high clarity material is strong and lightweight and will biodegrade “to nothing” within 90-100 days in landfill and biocompost within 60 days “under controlled conditions”.

Md Kevin Curran adds: “PVC and APET have become the almost universal choice for plastic sandwich wedges, but we can now supply a more environmentally-sustainable alternative offering better clarity than PVC and equal to APET.”
