Family-owned firm Fazer offers bakery, confectionery, biscuit and grain products, plant-based meals, non-dairy products, on-the-go food & drinks as well as food and café services.

The cooperation, which is effective from May 2018, is a part of Fazer’s strategy to become responsible, modern food company by reducing the plastic use in packaging using new technologies.

As part of its effort, Fazer plans to launch confectionery gift box that uses a Sulapac solution, for Christmas 2018.

The Fazer’s assorted confectionery will be launched in biodegradable packaging that contains no microplastics.

Fazer Group corporate responsibility director Nina Elomaa said: “Fazer is actively involved in discussions on recycling and re-use of packaging waste, as well as the development of new kinds of environmentally friendly packaging solutions.”

Sulapac develops fully biodegradable packaging materials and solutions containing no microplastics.

Through the collaboration, Fazer wants to help to develop the Sulapac packaging material to the next level for food packaging by supporting the latter’s research and development.

Sulapac CEO and founder Suvi Haimi said: “Collaborating with Fazer is an excellent opportunity to develop and learn together. It also shows that we can meet extremely demanding quality requirements.

“We will start with premium products, but the aim is to make Sulapac material available for all consumers around the world.”

At present, the two firms plan to create gift packaging for Fazer’s premium products that combine sustainable development with a hint of luxury, Sulapac said.

Earlier this year, Stora Enso has signed a joint development agreement with Sulapac to combat the plastic waste and accelerate growth in renewable materials.

The partners will accelerate the use of fully renewable, recyclable and biodegradable materials in packaging.

As part of the work, Stora Enso will license Sulapac’s materials and technology, and develop fully renewable caps and closures for liquid packages.
