Merck’s healthcare business EMD Serono has introduced new sustainable Slim Pack fertility medication packaging, as part of its sustainable efforts.

The new packaging, which is 40%‡ smaller than the company’s GONAL-f RFF Redi-ject  (follitropin alfa injection) pen, is designed to use less refrigerated space at home for patients and in the clinic for customers.

EMD Serono stated that its fertility medication remains unchanged within a redesigned, smaller package.

EMD Serono president Chris Round said: “As leaders in healthcare, we are focused on improving the experiences of our patients and customers while recognizing our responsibility to preserve the planet for future generations.

“Our new Slim Pack is an initiative we hope will drive convenience while reducing our overall carbon footprint.”

The new packaging is produced using 100% recyclable cardboard, thereby replacing the earlier plastic tray. It is expected to help eliminate around 180 metric tonnes of plastic waste per annum.

Slim Pack is expected to reduce GONAL-f RFF Redi-ject’s global carbon footprint by 33%, thereby playing a key role in reducing Merck’s annual worldwide CO2 emissions.

The pack size reduction is also anticipated to have a positive impact on the supply chain process, as less cold storage space enables the transportation of more products in fewer shipments.

In October 2018, Merck had opened a new pharma packaging centre at its headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany.
