Domino Printing Sciences has introduced a new piezo inkjet (PIJ) printer set, dubbed Cx350i, for printing on secondary packaging.

Designed to address issues with outer case coding, the new Cx350i is suitable for low-cost printing of GS1-compliant machine-readable codes onto cases, trays, and other secondary packaging types.

Before the global launch, the new direct-to-box printing solution was evaluated under customer trials across the US and Europe.

International food manufacturer Kerry Ingredients, which conducts operations in the US, Ireland, and mainland Europe, is one of the participants in customer trials.

Domino stated that the new printer launch is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to support customers enhance production efficiency and minimise manufacturing waste associated with inefficient coding.

Domino PIJ product manager David Edwards said: “Code quality, especially with regards to barcodes, is a top priority when printing on secondary packaging.

“A poor quality barcode may fail to scan, which can lead to rejection by retailers, costing manufacturers huge amounts in rework and wasted stock. GS1 estimates the cost of poor barcode quality in the UK to be somewhere between £500 million and £1 billion per year.”

Domino has designed the new printer for clean and reliable printing at high speeds, in addition to delivering maximum stability and precise code placement and consistency even under production line vibrations.

The stainless steel printhead will help deliver better resolution printing on GS1-compliant barcodes, batch and product information, and other variable data. Optional inline barcode validation further minimises the risk of printing errors and incorrect codes.

The Cx350i is installed with the company’s QuickStep user interface and an advanced touchscreen control to rapidly adjust settings and select, edit, or create print designs with ease.

In addition, the new printer is compatible with the firm’s coding automation solutions that offer options for integration into factory ERP and MES systems.

An optional Domino Cloud connectivity can also be used by the manufacturers for remote monitoring of production line performance.
