European packaging company Coveris has announced an investment of £1.5m to expand its linerless label manufacturing capabilities of its facility in Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK.

The investment in wide web printing presses and site infrastructure developments is intended to expand the production capacity of Coveris’ dedicated linerless label facility.

According to the firm, the capacity expansion project aims for better quality print and to boost operational efficiencies to support its sustainability strategy of no waste.

Linerless label manufacturer Coveris Spalding has spent more than £1.5m on new flexographic wide web presses with the latest print technologies along with further site infrastructure upgrades.

Coveris said that the investment increases output and supports the Lincolnshire-based facility’s expansion plans in existing and diversified markets. The facility currently produces over one billion linerless labels annually for the UK and European FMCG sectors.

Two new MPS flexographic presses have been installed at Coveris Spalding in a phased programme and commenced operations in September and November 2022.

The new printing equipment can print Coveris’ core linerless formats Slidewrap, c-wrap, envelope, labels for producing punnets and contour-fitted formats for skinpack solutions. It also offers 10 colour flexographic print including decorative cold foil embellishment.

The investment offers better quality, colour control, and consistency, with the added benefit of reducing waste thanks to its 100% web inspection capabilities, the European packaging firm added.

The MPS presses are more energy-efficient and equipped with E-Sleeve technology for increased precision, quicker set-up times, and less production waste, further aligning them with Coveris’ sustainability goal.

Coveris BU Paper sales director Nigel Hewitt said: “The addition of unique wide web capabilities in our world-leading, dedicated linerless labels facility is a significant investment.

“We aim to stay at the forefront of linerless technologies, innovation and quality alongside a sustainable operational model.

“With this investment, our customers benefit from improved linerless capacity and the newest print technologies, whilst we are also targeting accelerated growth outside of our core meat, fish, poultry and convenience markets.”
