Flexible packaging solutions manufacturer Coveris and Austrian paper manufacturer Brigl & Bergmeister have unveiled new sustainable PaperBarrier Seal material.

PaperBarrier Seal is a fully recyclable and sustainably sourced packaging material, which provides the same functionality and product safety as existing packaging alternatives.

The new paper-based packaging material will also help manufacturers to minimise both packaging and product waste, thereby extending their support to NO WASTE strategy.

Brigl & Bergmeister global business development director Thomas Fabian said: “We are extremely proud of our latest invention and believe that PaperBarrier Seal is the optimal packaging solution that food brands have been waiting for years.

“It wouldn’t be possible to achieve this success in such a short time without the combination of paper and converting know-how of both companies, which should be a good practice for future developments.”

PaperBarrier Seal features special paper coating, which facilitates sealability and supports recycling in existing paper streams.

The new packaging material is available in three versions with different barrier properties, including moisture, oxygen, grease, and mineral oils.

Designed to provide the same product protection as plastic alternatives, PaperBarrier Seal is said to ensure comparable production efficiencies as standard packaging solutions.

Coveris Group CEO Jakob Mosser said: “With the launch of PaperBarrier Seal, Coveris expands its portfolio to another sustainable packaging alternative applicable for a wide variety of dried fruits, cereals, sweets, snacks and even chocolate products.

“This new development was also a logical step in Coveris’ NO WASTE strategy, which focuses on eliminating product waste from production and operations, enforcing recycling and second life approaches.”

The companies are exhibiting the PaperBarrier Seal at this year’s Fachpack event, which is being held between 28 September and 30 September.

In September last year, Coveris completed the acquisition of paper bags and paper-based flexibles manufacturer HLB|SFV.
