Australian supermarket chain Coles has decided to remove plastic measuring scoops from its own-brand laundry powders.

The chain has removed the scoops from Coles Tropical Paradise and Coles Ultra Original and Sensitive laundry powders from 1 April.

Through the initiative, Coles will expect to save three tonnes of plastic in a single year which will boost the firm’s ambition to become Australia’s most sustainable supermarket.

The firm’s move aligns with its Together to Zero waste ambition, carved to reduce waste and unnecessary plastics.

Marked with ‘Reducing our Impact’, the new scoopless laundry powders will feature a light green lid to ensure customers can easily find the packs.

The detergent dosing instructions are also included in the box to assist consumers in measuring their powder without the need for a scoop.

Coles will also encourage customers to keep their scoops and reuse them, in case they already own plastic measuring scoops.

Coles general manager own brand Charlotte Rhodes said: “As customers look to live and shop more sustainably, Coles is leading the way in innovation and value, offering customers quality options across household necessities that won’t hurt the planet or the budget.

“As part of our Together to zero waste journey, Coles is proud to provide customers with more sustainable solutions.”

Rhodes added: “Removing plastic scoops from Coles Brand laundry packs is a small step we can take with our customers that will reduce our environmental footprint.

“In addition to our wider sustainability initiatives, every change and commitment we make toward a greener future helps to create a better Australia for generations to come.”

In 2021, Coles joined Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact (ANZPAC) to show its commitment to packaging sustainability.

Earlier this week, Coles announced the launch of new sustainable coffee pods as a part of its Coles Urban Coffee Culture brand.
