Charter Next Generation (CNG) has partnered with Revolution Sustainable Solutions to drive the use of post-consumer recycled, linear low-density polyethylene (PCR-LLDPE) in food and flexible packaging applications.

The partnership aims to combine Revolution’s recycling process with CNG’s expertise in developing films with post-consumer resins.

Under the deal, speciality film producer CNG will provide the Revolution’s Encore food-grade PCR-LLDPE resin in its film products.

CNG’s film portfolio includes stand-up pouches, pre-made bags, and roll stock applications for both vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) and horizontal form fill and seal (HFFS) packaging.

CNG films produced with Revolution’s certified PCR resin will offer 40% or more recycled content, without compromising on the performance.

CNG Corporate Sustainability director Scott Hammer said: “CNG is excited to partner with Revolution to bring food-grade LLDPE post-consumer resins to the market.

“Revolution’s proprietary recycling process, combined with CNG’s expertise in developing films with post-consumer resins enables brands to transition to post-consumer recycled materials without sacrificing performance.”

Revolution, a plastic recycler, launched the Encore food-grade PCR-LLDPE in 2022 after receiving a Letter of No Objection (LNO) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2021.

The company said that the resin will help the brands that plan to use PCR content in food contact packaging.

The LNO permitted the production of PCR-LLDPE for flexible films in food contact using Revolution’s patented recycling process at content levels up to 100% for all forms of food packaging under almost all Conditions of Use.

Revolution sustainable materials vice president Tammy Rucker said: “We are proud to have developed a process to manufacture and offer high-grade PCR-LLDPE for customers committed to using recycled content in consumer packaging.

“And our partnership with CNG is a significant step forward to narrow the gap in the demand for post-consumer recycled content in plastic packaging for food-contact applications.”

As members of the US Plastics Pact, Revolution and Charter Next Generation have plans to include 30% of PCR content in their flexible film food packaging by 2025.
