LG Chem and South Korean logistics company CJ Logistics have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collect and recycle the packaging wraps discarded at the latter’s nationwide logistics centres.

The South Korean chemical company will leverage its post-consumer recycle (PCR) technologies to make recycled wraps and deliver them back to CJ Logistics.

LG Chem will start this plastic recycling and resource circulation deal by delivering 1,000 rolls of recycled wrap to the logistics company this month.

In the future, LG Chem intends to increase the number by recycling the additional packaging wraps from CJ Logistics.

According to the chemical company, the environmentally friendly project will reduce the amount of waste generated by deliveries. It is also anticipated to create a recycling ecosystem that will collect packaging wraps produced at each logistics centre by utilising the logistics network.

LG Chem VP and LG PO (Polyolefin) sales and marketing head Samuel Han said: “We will construct a plastic circular economy by recycling packaging wrap that can be collected at logistics centres around the nation and contribute to reducing carbons for a sustainable future.”

Additionally, the chemical firm started the construction of a pyrolysis plant in March this year to increase carbon neutrality resource circulation activities.

LG Chem has also introduced diapers and floor materials made from biomaterials and launched sustainable set-top boxes and remote controllers prepared by using recycled plastics as per its sustainability strategy.

Last year, the chemical firm partnered with CJ Logistics and Innerbottle to expedite the construction of an eco-platform that includes plastic production, collection after use, and recycling.

In September 2021, the company partnered with Korean e-commerce firm Coupang to launch a sustainable project to recover and recycle plastic waste.

Plastic resources will be collected from Coupang’s fulfilment centre and converted into polyethylene (PE) film using LG Chem’s PCR technology.
