South Korea-based CJ CheilJedang’s CJ Biomaterials has developed a new cosmetic jar leveraging its amorphous polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) technology, dubbed PHACT, for cosmetics brand Banila.

The cosmetic container is intended to store Banila’s Ceramide Cleansing Balm, a part of Banila’s Clean It Zero line of eco-friendly products.

The product is already available at CJ Olive Young’s stores across the country.

The Clean It Zero Ceramide Cleansing Balm is the result of a deal between Banila and the lifestyle company CJ CheilJedang to launch sustainable materials.

According to CJ Bio, the ceramide component of the balm is taken from the seeds of the moringa tree, while the other ingredients are derived from plants. An accompanying application spatula was also made from biobased materials, along with the PHA-based container.

Additionally, the product’s paper packaging has received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. It implies that the paper was made from wood from sustainably managed, economically viable and environmentally responsible forests.

The Banila washing balm is claimed as the first cosmetic product to use an injection-moulded amorphous PHA from CJ Biomaterials.

We are committed to continuing to scale production of PHA to meet that demand.”

CJ Bio develops amorphous PHA, which is a softer, more rubbery variety of PHA that has different characteristics than crystalline or semi-crystalline forms of PHA.

PHACT is said to be an aPHA product which is TUV OK Certified for soil biodegradable, residential and commercial compost, and marine biodegradable.

It can be composted at home because it doesn’t need specialist machinery or high temperatures to break down completely, CJ CheilJedang’s division added.
