US-based food company Chobani has unveiled a new paper cup for yoghurt products, as part of its sustainable efforts.

The new paper-based cup is part of the company’s initiative to minimise plastic use and place sustainable packaging on shelves across America.

Chobani is already offering oatmilk, cold brew coffee and coffee creamers in recyclable paper-based packaging.

The company will initially introduce its single-serve Chobani Oat Blend in the new paper-based packaging. It will be available at the end of this year.

Chobani stated that it is moving its oat yoghurt into the paper-based cup after two years of development and is aiming to explore more sustainable packaging across the firm’s portfolio that will use less plastic and more paper.

The new sustainable cup is produced using 80% paperboard, which is composed of responsibly sourced and renewable material.

The new paper-based cup features a thin plastic lining, which will help maintain the quality of the product.

Chobani also noted that it continues to collaborate with partners, including the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and policymakers, to expand the recycling infrastructure in the country.

Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya said: “We all have a role to play in protecting our planet.

“People have been asking for a paper cup, and we welcome this challenge to start reducing our plastic use, and to spark a conversation about how we can drive change together.”

In March this year, Chobani joined the How2Recycle label programme to help consumers of the brand quickly recycle their Chobani packaging once completed.

Chobani’s product portfolio consists of yoghurt, oatmilk, dairy and plant-based creamers, ready-to-drink coffee and plant-based probiotic drinks.
