The Confederation of Paper Industries has welcomed the results of the UK Government’s fact finding exercise into allegations of inappropriate issuing of Packaging Waste Recovery Notes and Packaging Waste Export Recovery Notes by some packaging reprocessors.

Kathy Bradley, CPI director of external affairs, says: “We have long stressed the importance of tight monitoring of the PRN and PERN systems, and the need for accurate statistics in which all sectors have confidence”. We are pleased the fact finding exercise is to continue. There are too many PRNs in the system at the moment and as a consequence the price has been driven down and is failing to provide the funds required to improve the UK’s recovery performance.

“This is putting extreme pressure on reprocessors and collectors alike. They need to be assured, above all else, that the system is being administered and audited in a transparent and consistent way. We look forward to receiving the full fact finding mission report”.
