Focus of Applied Films’ ICE 2005 participation (hall 3, stand 3-B07) will be production of colour shift layers on plastics film produced through electron beam evaporation. When viewed from different angles, these layers change their reflected colour, making them very attractive for decorative packaging and security label applications.

The optical effect is known as ‘Fabry-Perot’, and the correspondent layer stack is called ‘Fabry Perot Filter’. Applied Films’ proprietary Fabry Perot Filter’ consists of a threelayer stack. A thick aluminium base layer on the film acts as a mirror, a middle transparent oxide layer (Al2O3) which depending on its thickness allows the light to reflect in different colours, and a top semi transparent thin metallic layer (aluminium).

The company’s Topbeam system can produce these layers with a typical coating speed of 20m/min.
